Adam Elk: guitar, voice
|
Adam Elk is the nom de plume of ex-Mommyhead Adam Cohen, whose 1997 major label debut (produced by Don Was) was comparable to the work of the greatest songwriters, like Aimee Mann, Michael Penn and John Brion: pure pop songcraft with hooks to spare, keen lyrics and clever turns of phrase. Expanded to a six piece band, the line-up features some of the smartest purveyors of pop on the San Francisco scene: Adam handles guitar and voice, Josh Rifkin keyboards, Dan Fisherman keyboards & percussion, Matt Torrey drums, Jason McNair bass and Bart Davenport backing vocals.

Beautifully crafted and brimming with ideas, Labello is equal parts tight boogie and lush pop orchestrations. There's the gritty funk of "It's Raining in Here" or "Too Much of Nothing", and the emphatic resurgence of blue-eyed soul on "Great Mistake" and "Suspended." Recorded over the summer of 1998, Adam called on his songwriting pals to contribute ace performances all over this album. Todd Roper from Cake drums on most tracks, Bart Davenport of the Kinetics and John Vanderslice of MK Ultra contribute backing vocals, Marc Capelle plays a little trumpet and a few other folks crop up here and there.
